Please note: This page is only for Phonos version 1.0: version 2.0 and later does not require any PC software.
In order for the Phonos application on the phone to connect to your Sonos equipment it is necessary to install a small program on a PC
that shares the same network. This is known as the Phonos Server, and it runs in the background, invisibly, and does not require anyone to be logged in to the PC. Additionally a program is installed on the task bar called the Phonos Monitor that
allows access to Favorites you have marked on your phone and some other configuration settings.
Phonos System Requirements
PC running a supported operating system (see below)
Windows Phone 7
Wi-Fi network
Sonos multi-room music system
If you have multiple PCs in your household, ideally you should install the PC software on the machine that is always on. If the PC is off
(or asleep) then Phonos on your phone will not be able to connect to your Sonos Zones. Installation should take less than a minute and not require a reboot (unless
it has to install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 which will take substantially longer).
If you are not sure whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows don't worry: just pick one and Setup will immediately stop if you chose the wrong one.
Windows XP SP3
Firstly configure the Windows XP Firewall, then download this and run Setup.exe.
Windows Vista/Windows 7 (32-bit)
Download this and run Setup.exe.
Windows Vista/Windows 7 (64-bit)
Download this and run Setup.exe.
Windows Home Server v1
Download this and copy phonos32.msi to \\SERVERNAME\Software\Add-Ins (replace SERVERNAME with the name of your Windows Home Server). Log in to the Home Server
Console, then go to Settings / Add-Ins and click the Available tab. You should see Phonos listed there, click Install. If you want to use the Favorites
feature from a different PC, see Using the Phonos Monitor on a different computer.
Windows Home Server v2
(This is a bit more painful than it should be, we are working on improving this.)
Use Remote Desktop to log into the server, then
download this and run Setup.exe.
If you want to use the Favorites
feature from a different PC, see Using the Phonos Monitor on a different computer.
Advanced Setup Topics
Windows XP Firewall
(This requires Administrator privileges).
Go to Control Panel / Security Center / Windows Firewall and click on Exceptions. Find the "UPNP Framework" item and ensure it is checked then click OK.
Non-Microsoft Firewalls
If you are using a third-party Firewall on the PC running the Phonos Server you may need to configure it manually. The Phonos Server needs TCP port 7008 opened
to the local network, please see your firewall documentation for details. If you have never installed Sonos' own PC software you may also need to
configure the firewall to allow UPNP traffic.
Advanced: Using the Phonos Monitor on a different computer
If you wish to use the Phonos Monitor on a different computer than the Phonos Server you just installed, so you can get to your Favorites for example,
you can do this. Install the software on the second pc, as described above (ignoring any Firewall notes), then set the Service on the second PC to
Startup Type: Manual (see below). Right click on the Monitor
icon in the task bar and select Settings... and set the Server Name to be the name of the PC you installed the software on originally.
Advanced: Starting and Stopping the Phonos Service
(This requires Administrator privileges).
On the Start menu click "Run..." and enter services.msc and press Return. Look down the list for "Phonos Service", then you can Start, Stop
and Restart the service if necessary. If you want to stop the Service permanently you will need to select its Properties and change its Startup Type
from Automatic to Manual. If the service is not running then the phone application will not be able to communicate with your Sonos Zones.
